Organization Description: Equality New Mexico (EQNM) is a state wide non profit organization that works to support full civil rights in multiple facets such as housing, employment, hate crimes, and marriage equality for all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender (LGBT) New Mexicans regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity through field education projects such as voter identification, community education and outreach programs, and lobbying. 

Internship Description: Equality New Mexico interns have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of ongoing projects vital to the organization.  They will be able to work in community organizing while educating New Mexicans on the issues that affect the LGBT community of New Mexico.


Supervision: The internship supervisor is dependent upon the type of internship tasks which each candidate desires and is qualified to do.  The statewide education and outreach coordinator will supervise most interns however, business and organizational management students will be supervised by the Executive Director and given more organizational development tasks and experiences; law students will have additional regular access and work opportunities with the EQNM Board Chair working specifically on legal issues related to the non profit as well as legal issues involving the LGBT community in New Mexico.

 

Tasks/General Assistance:

 

            1. Education

o     Research and writing of position papers, outreach materials, speaker’s bureau training materials, etc.

            2. Event Planning and Production

o        Issue identification

o        Identification of population to be served

o        Event logistics and media planning

            3. Field Operations & Development Assistance

o     Canvassing: door to door voter education

o     Turf Cutting: identifying canvassing areas

o     Volunteer Training

o        Field Packet Preparation

            4. Volunteer Recruitment

o     Phonebanking for Events, Canvasses, & Other Volunteer Opportunities     

            5. Membership Building

o     Phonebanking membership list

o     Updating Contacts

o     Generating Membership

            6. Office Assistance

o     File organization assistance

o     Archive/Library organization

            7. Fundraising Assistance

o        House party prep & coordination

            8. Data Organization

o     Data Entry

o     Data De-duplication

o     Data Clean-up

o     Database Updating        

 

Qualifications

 

o        Excellent Communication Skills

o        People Oriented

o        Organizing experience such as canvassing, phone banking or general volunteerism

o        A general and genuine commitment to social justice work

o        Discretion

o        Literacy

o        Own Transportation with insurance
