In the 2019 legislative session our organizations worked to successfully pass the Vital Records Modernization Act. The bill modernized New Mexico’s process for correction of sex designation on birth certificates – a big victory for transgender, non-conforming, intersex people born in the state.
Now, we’ve got to take this fight across the finish line and ensure that the agency-level rules that implement the bill are successfully passed. We need your help!

SAMPLE STATEMENTS TO ADD INTO YOUR COMMENT:
Start with a statement expressing your support for the proposed rule:
My name is ________ and I fully support the proposed rule change to NMAC 7.2.2 implementing the Vital Records Modernization Act
Then add in some commentary about why this matters to you:
Transgender people may need to correct the sex designation on their birth certificates for practical, personal, and safety reasons.
Requiring proof of surgery or any other specific medical treatment is outdated and discriminatory.
Self-attestation reflects the most accurate information about a person’s gender identity.
A gender neutral sex designation is important to ensure accuracy and privacy on vital records.
Finally, add a conclusion:
Thank you for your consideration, I encourage you to accept these changes.
